Wetley Moor Snowfall

A landscape photography blog by Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire based landscape photographer Rob Thorley Photography.

I was knackered before I started! The prospect of snow, and the anticipation of photographing it had given me a restless nights sleep. I’d glanced at my alarm clock every hour since 02:30, as I waited for my 06:00 alarm.

The forecast was for a decent covering early doors. I didn’t fancy a drive out, and still being in tier 3 I technically shouldn’t venture too far. With that in mind Wetley Moor, Staffordshire was the location.

I can easily walk to Wetley Moor from my doorstep within fifteen minutes, although this morning with a brisk east wind blowing the snow into my face, and a decent covering on the ground it took the best part of half an hour to get there. I was conscious of the wind direction as it meant I really wanted to be photographing behind me to avoid getting the lens covered in water drops. This meant that I circled out wide, so as not to have my footsteps disturbing the fresh snow.

I’ve never photographed snow before, so was quite pleased with these images. I’d got in the back of my mind that I needed to over expose the photographs, as the camera gets tricked by the whiteness of the landscape.

Hopefully we may get a another flurry before my holidays come to an end, so I can practice a bit more, and grab a few more images.

You can view more images from my gallery of other Staffordshire locations.
