The Roaches winter sunrise.

Still on my Christmas holidays I headed off to The Roaches on a cold, crisp morning in the hope of capturing a decent sunrise.

The weather as usual didn’t play ball, and whilst there had been a light dusting of snow on The Roaches I felt that it was more of a hinderance than a help. The volume of snow made the foreground looked messy, and with no light to speak of it was one of those uninspiring occasions. I took an image of one of the classical compositions, and felt I’d had the best of what was going to be a drab winters day. Shortly afterwards I packed up, and headed back to the car and home.

I like to think that making this kind of a decision is showing a maturity in my landscape photography. In years gone by I’d probably have stayed out, effectively trying to “flog a dead horse”. Whilst I’m happy to call it when I know it’s not happening there is still a little nagging doubt that says “You must try harder” . . .

You can view more images from The Roaches, and my gallery of other Peak District locations.
